Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides aid, support, and supervision to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities commonly provide outings for leisurely activity, assistance with appointments and transit, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These areas include exploitation of a resident, proper food preparation, including the special needs of residents with dementia, and provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and assisted living care. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with self-administration, assisting with an Epi pen, and assisting residents with storage of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, personal preferences relative to care needs, and care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25.
