Assisted living communities provide social events, personal care, and oversight to individuals who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often provide help with transportation and appointments, aid with daily activities, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes governs this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, including the special needs of residents with dementia, assistance with medications, and reporting requirements. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, assisting residents with self-administration, and assisting with an Epi pen. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, whether family supports are available, personal preferences relative to care needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
