Assisted living communities administer social opportunities, oversight, and personal care to people who are on average 65 years old. Services provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, skilled nursing care, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes governs this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, whether family supports are available, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, and assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These include: assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, including the special needs of residents with dementia, general infection control principles, and Residents’ rights. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, assisting with an Epi pen, and cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications . Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and assisted living care. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day.
