Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and health care to your loved one who might need a helping hand with everyday activities such as bathing or mobility. The types of service offered often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, nursing, or continuing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, applying topical medications, and assisting residents with storage of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include assistance with medications, reporting requirements, emergency first-aid and CPR, and training necessary to carry out assigned job duties. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, described as personal services, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and the provision of assisted self-preservation.
