Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer social opportunities, supervision, and personal care to persons around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, hospice, or respite. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: general infection control principles, Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, proper food preparation, and emergency preparedness. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, assisted living care, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, assisting residents with self-administration, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, and whether family supports are available. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
