Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, assistance, and care to medically stable persons who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently offer care supervision, opportunities for organized activity, and assistance with appointments and transit. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, respite, or Alzheimer’s care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation licenses this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, and personal care services. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: universal precautions, resident behavior and needs, community emergency procedures, and emergency evacuation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, reading the label, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and communities must document such assessment.
