Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, supervision, and care to individuals who are on average 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer dementia care, “aging in place”, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , communities must document such assessment, medical examination report, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, and personal care services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, licensed nursing staff may administer medications, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include 26 hours of training plus a competency test, infection control, universal precautions, and providing assistance with activities of daily living. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program.
