Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individual help. Assisted living communities usually provide care supervision, assistance with the activities of daily life, and opportunities for social activity. In select instances, communities may offer “aging in place”, dementia care, or hospice. The annual median cost for a private room is around $166,988 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $152,388 . The state of Connecticut maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing certifies this type of community. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These areas include 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, aides must pass a competency exam, community policies and procedures, and applicable regulations. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs, RN conducts consultation with the resident, and plan must include types and frequency of services needed. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident teaching, assistance with ADLs, delegation of supervision of self-administered medications, and nursing services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , opening medication packages, and reminding residents to take medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day.
