Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers assistance, support, and care to healthy persons who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities usually provide supervision of care, assistance with daily activities, and outings for social activity. In certain instances, communities may offer continuing care, respite, or hospice. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These areas include how to recognize early signs of illness, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, the aging process, and 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
