Assisted living communities provide oversight, social opportunities, and personal care to people around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often provide help with appointments and transportation, outings for recreational activity, and aid with daily activities. In some situations, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: housekeeping and sanitation procedures, psychosocial aspects of aging, how to recognize early signs of illness, and skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care.
