Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and aid for persons who might need a helping hand with things such as mobility or self-administering medication. Assisted living communities usually provide assistance with the activities of daily life, supervision of care, and outings for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, nursing care, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, and meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds . Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These include: medication policies and procedures, Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years, 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, and the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program.
