An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers supervision, care, and support to medically stable seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often provide care supervision, assistance with appointments and transit, and chances for leisurely activity. In certain instances, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or hospice. In Arizona, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of Arizona has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Division of Public Health Licensing Services, Bureau of Residential communities Licensing regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervisory care services, ensure the safety of residents who may wander, activities to maximize functioning, and ancillary services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, The level of service the resident is expected to receive, and the amount, type, and frequency of services that will be provided to the resident. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide meals and snacks in accordance with federal dietary guidelines, meals must meets the nutritional needs of residents, and meals must comply with therapeutic diets specified in their service plan. Public assistance is available through Arizona Long-Term Care System (ALTCS). Staff must receive training in a number of subjects. These include: cardiopulmonary resuscitation for adults, first-aid, in-service education, and orientation that is specific to duties. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, monitoring of self-administration, and assistance with self administration.
