Assisted living communities provide organized social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individualized support. Services provided often include help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer's care, nursing care, or "aging in place". In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . Alabama maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards certifies this type of community. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative and medical examination by a physician prior to admission. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include social activities, general observation and health supervision, housekeeping, and ADL assistance. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable.
