Assisted living communities have the luxury of organized social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized assistance. The services provided often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing, respite, or hospice. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . The state of Alabama has a number of provisions related to this type of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards governs this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets, meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, communities must serve daily at least three meals, and Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal. These include: advance directives, identifying and reporting abuse, neglect and exploitation, fire and environmental safety, and signs and symptoms of dementia. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include ADL assistance, housekeeping, medication services, and general observation and health supervision. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative and medical examination by a physician prior to admission.
