An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides supervision, assistance, and care to medically stable individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently offer supervision of care, aid with transportation and appointments, and opportunities for leisurely activity. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative and medical examination by a physician prior to admission. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These include: advance directives, a 20-hour classroom training program, fire and environmental safety, and applicable rules and statutes.
