An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, supervision, and aid to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The types of service offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or hospice. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . The state of Alabama has specific rules associated with this type of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include coordination of medical transportation, medication services, ADL assistance, and medical attention or nursing services. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: needs of the elderly, mentally ill, and intellectually disabled, identifying and reporting abuse, neglect and exploitation, confidentiality, and signs and symptoms of dementia. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative and medical examination by a physician prior to admission. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets, and communities must serve daily at least three meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable.
