Assisted living communities provide apartment style housing and social interaction as well as personalized assistance. The services offered often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, dementia care, or respite. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . Alabama has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These include: advance directives, signs and symptoms of dementia, 19 years of age, and fire and environmental safety. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, communities must serve daily at least three meals, Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets, and meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include ADL assistance, social activities, coordination of medical transportation, and laundry. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
