Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

As the capital of Iowa, Des Moines combines midwest charm and metropolitan sensibilities to create a city that is filled with arts and culture. Dominating the skyline of the historic East Village neighborhood is the gold-domed Iowa State Capitol building. Located nearby is the Des Moines Art Center which houses a wide collection of contemporary works as well as the Pappajohn Sculpture Park. The park is host to a number of annual events including the Des Moines Art Festival and the 80/35 Music Festival. The Salisbury House and Gardens is another popular venue that also features tours of the estate that highlight the architecture, local history, and regional biodiversity.

For those who enjoy outdoor recreation there are a number of excellent parks located within the city limits. These include the Des Moines Water Park which features a beautiful garden filled with fountains and other water displays. Walnut Woods state park is one of the largest parks in the city, spanning over 260-acres and miles of walking trails. The Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens features a pagoda, ponds, and a large collection of sculptures and outdoor art exhibits. The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden has outdoor and indoor gardens and a large geodesic dome.

Transportation

Mass transit is available in the city through the Des Moines Area Regional Transit authority or DART which operates 26 routes throughout the city and surrounding metropolitan areas. Greyhound buses also connect Des Moines with regional transit hubs in Minneapolis, Detroit, and Chicago.
