A place where there's an opportunity for quality of life - IF you take advantage of it

It's important to note that my loved one doesn't like it here, but he wouldn't like it anywhere. From his point of view, it'd be a completely different perspective from mine because he doesn't want to be there, but knows he can't be at home. So he's unhappy with a lot of things. For example: the activities - I know they have them and they offer them, but he wont initiate or engage in them. He hasn't experienced them because he doesn't want to, even though we try to encourage him to do so. With the dining experience: they offer round the clock food with different items and three meals a day, but he only goes down for lunch although we try to encourage him to go down more often. But because he won't, we bring him extra food. He's not utilizing a lot of the services, so it's not as bad as what it may seem to be in his eyes. He has troubles speaking up in regards to care services, but from what I've seen they try to do things for him. Another example: he stopped physical therapy because his arms were hurting, but most times you have to build muscle which can result in soreness. So the perspective behind it is that unfortunately my loved one would not be happy anywhere. I know that right now every industry & staffing is an issue. What I've seen is a lot of different staff coming and going with Rock Creek and with that, there are some things that haven't been done. It appears to me that they are trying. The staff issue is noticeable, especially in his case. He really liked one lady and so did I, she was fantastic, but she left. There have been a string of people that have left including directors. There's been three directors since November. There are inconsistencies in the staffing area. There's no chef, but the times I've experienced the meals it hasn't been that bad. There have still been inconsistencies, as other residents there have mentioned that it's not the best. My loved one doesn't take full advantage, but some of the menu items and combinations have been a little questionable. For example: they had a July 4th party where they served hot dogs with beans. Staffing I think is an issue as people need more help, but when you have staff coming and going there are going to be inconsistencies. Although my loved one doesn't participate, as I walk through I've noticed that there are activities always going on. They have bingo, Uno, a lounge area, a workout area, and a garden. The medical at this point is great. He fell one time and had to go to the emergency room; they were right on top of that and made sure he got there. They recognized the fact that he had an infection gong on, so the medical staff seem to be on board and they know what's going on. The other day he made a comment and the head nurse and / or medical director came to him to clarify some things. So I think the medial staff does a pretty good job. One thing we were originally told from the Assisted Living Director, who is no longer there, was that a nurse practitioner would be there every month and that does happen; but we were also told that he would be able to see a Doctor once every six months. He hasn't seen a Doctor yet and it's been past that. I'm unsure if that was a misunderstanding or if its supposed to be included - but I think it'd be nice to have a Doctor who could come and speak with the residents. Rock Creek Senior Living is a nice facility and it's in a nice area. I picked my loved one's apartment which overlooks a greenery of trees and a creek. Some people don't always have that option, some people face the parking lot, so that aspect of it makes it a pretty nice place. It's located in a nice clean part of town. I also think it's great that they work in conjunction with the hospice service, whether it's immediate or a long-term event. That's a nice feature that the residents don't have to leave the community. The fact that they work hand in hand with a hospice service is a nice surprise for us.... Read more

Rock Creek tops the charts!

My mother at age 96 reluctantly agreed to move out of the condominium she occupied for 32 years. My wife and I visited the senior living options in Ankeny where we live. There was no facility that had a small one room for Independent living with options to add services as needed. RC is like a family resort where approximately 60 residents live in a wide variety of rooms. Her rent has not been raised after a year and with three added services, her rent is still less than $3,000. Because of the size of RC, it is possible for the nurses and staff members get to know each resident. If my mother should need assisted living , she could stay in her current room. Full memory care is also available on a different floor with full 24/7 nursing care. Visitors quickly see why we have selected Rock Creek Ankeny.

Very Nice Facility and Nice Location

This is a very nice community. It is conveniently located to family to visit our loved one. The people are very friendly here. The communication with the staff is good. The only concern I would have is that I couldn't find anyone on the overnight shift to let them know what they needed to change for my loved one after a hospital visit. Overall, I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones.

A nice community but the care needs improvement

We were very impressed with the facility, the meals and dining services was excellent and the staff members were super nice. They were super good about signing all the papers and explaining all the care that was going to be given to our loved one - however once our loved one moved in it was nothing that we expected. Our loved one was supposed to go on walks twice a day and they did not do that. There was supposed to be someone there every time our loved one bathed and no one was ever there. There was supposed to be someone to change their leg bandages daily and during the weekends that did not happen.

check out dates of positive reviews

Prior to the Rock Creek purchase of Journey Senior Living I gave a great review. Today I gave 30 day notice to terminate. Communication is sub standard. Meals are questionable and rates go up every month. Rooms weren’t cleaned weekly over this past winter. If you want to see a calendar of activities, let me know—they don’t offer what they claim. Sorry my loved one deserves more. They did do a great job protecting from Covid.

Our tour of Journey Senior Living

We toured Journey and it is a very high quality place. The meals are all chef prepared and you can order food at anytime of the day so they are not served cafeteria style. They did not have any openings when we needed but I would highly recommend them.

Pleased with our choice

We chose Journey Senior Living of Ankeny because when she was in the hospital, they were not allowed to go back home due to health concerns. They were able to take her right away. They also helped us out with a price and really worked with us to make sure they could take her. Once we got in here, the staff members really bent over backwards for us. They are excellent with communication, we get special ones from the memory care wing that keep us informed. One of the things we have come to appreciate is that they are not a large facility and I think she is getting more personal care here. I would recommend to others looking.

Thankful A Place for Mom helped me find this good fit for my mom.

I felt that my mom needed memory care, the thing that impressed me the most about Journey was that is was a smaller size community. I liked that they have large rooms with their own bathroom. You really got to know the staff that was caring for your loved one. The community was set up in a square with a beautiful garden in the center. They have a very low turn over rate with the staff. My mom had a stroke during Covid-19 and the nurse was very kind and let me in to see her. The only negative was that the marketing director lead me to believe that she could stay there through the end of life and did not turn out to be the case.

The Next Best Thing to Being At Home

Whenever I come there, I am always greeted by the staff as I come in. Even the residents were very friendly to my dad. The staff make it a point to know all of the resident's names. I like, and my dad really appreciates, the restaurant style menu for the meals. That way he can order what he wants. The rooms have individual thermostats, so my dad has control of the temperature, which is a big thing for him and is a really nice feature.

Journey Senior Living

Journey has been a great experience for us so far. I like that it’s only six blocks from home, so I’m able to visit often. I also love the staff there. There is a 4 to 1 resident to caregiver ratio, so they are able to spend a lot of time with the residents. They are so kind, and they are always willing and ready to help. It’s a brand new facility, one of about five new ones built in our area in the past year, but I would definitely recommend it to others.
