Our mother was 97 years old when she entered the facility. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming to both my mom and my family. My mom passed away 7 weeks after she arrived. My family cannot thank all of the staff for the respect they showed my mom and the empathy they showed our family. We will miss her forever but we are eternally grateful to each and every staff member that we encountered during her stay at the facility.
I was pleased with my experience, dealing with All American. Of course, getting an elderly parent to move out of their long time home, and to an assisted living facility is, a big challenge. Like most elderly folks, my mom desperately wanted to stay, and live out the rest of her days, in her home of 61 years. And so, she resisted any, and all, change. That sentiment, tugs at one's heart, for sure. But her home was not built for a 90 year old, and so, was becoming an increasingly unsafe place for her. She was having increasing difficulty walking, generally, often could not get up (out of chairs), and was inclined to undertake dangerous evolutions (such as going up, and down, the basement stairs, by herself) just because she'd get impatient. Plus, even though she still handled her own personal hygiene, the time was rapidly approaching, where assistance with such, would be unavoidable. Further, especially with giving up Driving (several years earlier) she was quite isolated. With only my miserable [removed] for company, and, maybe, a couple visitors a month. She'd even stopped making/ taking phone ?? calls, because she couldn't get her hearing aids to interface with the phone. So, I (as the adult in the room) had to make the decision, that it was time to move. She finally relented, very late in the game, once her cognition had deteriorated, to the point that she could just barely follow, what was going on around her. In hindsight, I wish she'd moved to All American, years sooner. I think she would have enjoyed her latter years more there, rather than desperately clutching. Fighting constantly to hang on to a life she had loved, but which had, for some time, already been, long gone. I say this, as advice to anyone who faces a similar challenge. Don't fall for that: "Old people just want to stay in their homes" [removed] . Just smack, upside the head, anybody you meet, who espouses such sentiment. Once she got to All American, after a several week adjustment, she loved it! She was making friends. Playing Bingo, and going for walks outside, with friends, every day. The food was good, but simple. She wasn't crazy about it, but she was always super picky, anyhow. The only thing that was a hassle, was that at All American, she had to share a Bathroom, and Common area, with a Suite mate. One other woman. She totally wanted to go to a place where she had a private Bathroom. We looked at 4 different facilities. All the others had a private bathroom. I chose All American, though, because I judged the Staff to be much friendlier, and very interested in mom's unique needs. Plus, I felt that the other Residents were more comparable to my mom. Kind of drawn from a similar Social strata (working class, 'common' folk), mainly elderly (70+ to 95)and moving at about the same speed. ~ I thought she'd fit in. Wouldn't be left out, or behind. Turned out, that the bathroom wasn't that big a deal. There were some 'Suite mate' issues. The first one mom had, was on the edge of senility, and a couple times, forgot which room was her own, and climbed in to mom's bed. Not a huge thing, ultimately. I quickly brought this to the management's attention, and not long after, this woman moved to the Memory care wing. The next Suite mate, kind of took over the Common area as her own space, without really talking to my mom first. I found this annoying, but since my mom (who was there first) had refused to move even a 'stick' of Furniture, into the Common area, the point was moot. (she was afraid people would steal her stuff, which was a long running drama for her, but never an issue at All American) My mom passed away, maybe a month later. So, any ongoing issues, with that 2nd suite mate, never came to a head. ~ My point here, is that, I think, it behooves Family members to keep in touch, with what's going on at any Assisted living facility. I made it a point, to get to know all the Staff, by name, and talk to them regularly, to find out if there's anything mom might not be telling me. Maybe on purpose, or because she simply forgot? And to, if necessary, advocate for my mom's wellbeing, and care. Especially, if a parents 'whits' have greatly slowed, and they can no longer advocate for themselves. But also, to find out, how I could best work with the Staff, so they can do their job. Example: What's the right size Laundry basket? What are the necessary Incontinence products I should buy, etc. I got the feeling, that many elderly folks there, weren't getting all that much attention, from their families, any more. I wasn't overbearing, and controlling. I thought that folks at All American knew their jobs, and took good care of the Residents. I wanted to be in the 'Loop', but making no attempt to 'run the show'. I don't want to discourage anyone from considering All American, because I wrote a substantial amount about the Suite versus Private room issue. That's certainly an issue to consider, when weighing options. I think mom's 2nd Suite mate, would've been much better off, with a private room somewhere. Since she had no inclination to 'share'. (even taking over the Refrigerator, eventually) For many elders, I think the Suite set up, is better, and would make it easier, for them to Not isolate. If they were inclined, to go that route, when faced with the challenge of integrating into a new Community, later in life. I was concerned that my mom would simply 'hide out', and just perpetuate the isolation, of her last few years at home. Other, probably most, elders might be more inclined to be open to sharing some Common space. It's just kind of like being on a group vacation. Or college Room mates. One just needs to talk, negotiate, work it out, a small bit. I guess it depends on the individual.

The staff for the Memory Care unit at Rose Lane 2 are very caring and patient. The nurses are knowledgeable and hands on. The Administrator listens and takes action. You will find that no place is perfect. But what is important is that all staff will listen to suggestions and improve communication if needed. They have learned that my Mom responds well to jokes and sarcasm; they know her. I am so grateful to everyone caring for my Mom. Please remember, It's important for you to be present wherever your family member is.
