Overall, we have had a positive experience at Sunrise of Wilmington. The leadership team really cares about their residents and the quality of care that they provide. They take concerns seriously, and investigate them thoroughly. They are also willing to spend the necessary time to speak with the resident/family and decide the best plan of action for care. A minor place for improvement would be the responsiveness of the care staff. Sometimes the wait times get a little bit long. Also, Mom has some cognitive impairment, and she may not fully be aware of her options for dinner or activities. Some of the staff will help clarify that for her, which is fantastic. Others perhaps, not so much. As for the food, I have heard complaints from other residents as well as my Mom. I have tasted the food myself and it is amazingly bland. In some cases, they make food far too spicy, and yet it is still tasteless. Many times the rice will be crunchy and hard. This is the one place where I think things could really be improved. The quality of the ingredients seem reasonable, so I think it is just in the preparation. Overall, I would recommend this facility to family and friends.... Read more

Sunrise of Wilmington has a new business plan where they are taking on residents with higher levels of disabilities. This is a group that is underserved outside of skilled nursing environments so that's a good thing for families that need that level of care. However Sunrise needs more staff to adequately provide care for that population because those people often require 2 aides working together to provide appropriate care. Accordingly, wait times for help with daily activities such as getting out of bed and dressing can be quite long. Also Sunrise has no shower facilities for non-ambulatory residents so they can only receive bed baths which can impact skin care long term. The staff is very friendly, caring and well intentioned but they have difficulty keeping up with the work loads, including care by aides, servers in the dining room, etc. In fairness that seems to be an industry-wide problem but it's exacerbated by the high level of care that many Sunrise residents require. I would recommend that families considering Sunrise ask careful questions regarding the care plan the facility prepares for their family member and monitor closely whether the care plan is being followed. I moved my loved one out as they could not provide the care that he needed.

Great staff. Sunrise of Wilmington truly seems like a good place. The staff are all engaged in their work and try very hard to adjust to each resident's needs. Clearly they are good people who have been properly trained as needed and take pride in their work.

Response from Sunrise of Wilmington
August 2, 2022Hi TH, It is delightful to hear that you have been satisfied with the personalized support provided to your loved one by Sunrise of Wilmington. Our team members share a common goal of enriching every resident’s life by carefully listening to their needs and always delivering the very best. Thank you! – The Sunrise Team
I highly recommend this community for you or your loved one. They have a lot of activities to keep the residents busy and occupied. They have activities like singing, karaoke, puzzles, and more for the residents to do. They provide very good care for the residents as needed in the memory care department.

We chose Sunrise because we thought it would be the last place that we would have to move him to. We were under the impression that they provided skilled nursing, but they do not. I felt like when we were being sold that it was misrepresented.

Outstanding administration and caring community of nurses and staff. We love the smaller number or residents at Sunrise and the high nurse to resident ratio. Most of all my mother was sold when she learned that there is a wonderful resident dog and cat on the premises for residents to enjoy. We are very happy with Sunrise as our choice!

It is a nice place. It is expensive, but good for dementia. The staff are friendly and open. I'm not sure about the food, as I can only go off of what my loved one says. The community is good at keeping my loved one involved in activities.

We really liked everything about Sunrise of Wilmington, we liked that they told us if our loved one needs outside services they would get the same workers every single time. However, the price was just to high for us especially given our loved ones were at level 3 care.
I would recommend the community. The community and residents are nice. The people are great. The price was the only drawback for us.
It's a beautiful place, kept up beautifully. It was really hard to see any of the amenities. Everything was closed up due to Covid. The staff is great. Whenever you called they gave you an answer, and they always called you back. They were always polite when we spoke to them. I would definitely recommend Sunrise of Wilmington.

The community has a great wrapped around porch, and a great cafe with popcorn and milkshake machine. But speaking with some of the elderly who live at this community as we were waiting for our tour. The cafe is just for show, the last time the milkshake machine worked was 3 years ago and they do get popcorn at movie times every night (Movie time every night). The apartments had a strange style, they had a half wall in the middle of the apartment. The Sales person said that was in case was to share an apartment, they have a half-wall to separate them. (Doesn't seem like much separation, The apartments went from really small (maybe a bed and nightstand fit in there, with barely any room for a walker to get around the both sides of the bed (twin bed). To a larger apartment (almost a one bedroom, but separated by the bathroom/kitchen area - no door technical). The base prices seemed good, but a lot of nickel and dime of additional cost. Depending on the amount of meds Mom takes, it could X amount for 1-5 a day, and XX for 5-9 a day and XXX for 10-15 a day. Community fee equal to one month's rent, including care... WHAT??!! Not a community for Mom

I had looked into Sunrise several years ago for my parents and it was top notch then, and continues to be, especially with the enhanced memory/care "neighborhood." [Name removed] was extremely helpful, as were Nurse [name removed] and Unit Manager [name removed] in their coming out to assess Mother's condition for entry to the facility. Excellent facility, resources, staffing; Sunset would be great if it were not for Mother's medical conditions precluding her acceptance at this time. Perhaps, in time, if she should improve, Mother would be a prime candidate for residency in the memory unit, but again, not a good fit for her at this time. Highly recommend Sunrise for those who are suitable.

Very nice facility, [Removed] was very helpful. The facility was very clean and the rooms were spacious. The residents appeared to be happy and spoke well of the food. This is the first facility that I visited but I would definitely consider this as a place for my Mom.

My wife, and I had a pleasant tour of this community. Everything went pretty well, and everyone was kind to us. From what we saw the community looked good. Everything was nice, and clean. The staff was friendly, helpful. It was a good experience, but this community did not fit into our budget.

This looked like a nice community when I visited. The people I met were friendly. This community seems to offer some nice activities. The cost of this community was just a little higher than what we were looking for.

A Place for Mom has scored Sunrise of Wilmington 8.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
