Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers supervision, support, and assistance to self-sufficient persons who do not require skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may provide nursing, hospice, or dementia care. The state of Wisconsin maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, including personal care, health monitoring, and independent living skills. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include resident rights, fire safety, job responsibilities, and reporting abuse. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled.
