Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual care. Assisted living communities frequently provide care supervision, aid with daily activities, and assistance with transit and appointments. In select cases, communities may offer dementia care, “aging in place”, or hospice. Wisconsin has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These include: reporting abuse, first-aid, provision of personal care, and standard precautions. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include including personal care, behavior management, independent living skills, and resident-specific services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and these meals must meet residents special dietary needs. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled.
