Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, assistance, and care to independent individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services offered often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or “aging in place”. The state of Wisconsin maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health monitoring, activity programming for persons with dementia, behavior management, and supervision. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include provision of personal care, fire safety, job responsibilities, and challenging behaviors. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled.
