Assisted living communities offer residential communities and assistance for seniors who may require help with everyday activities such as washing or mobility. The types of service offered often involve support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In certain cases, communities may offer respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) governs this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include practitioner, nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, resident self-administration of medication, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES). Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, activities and service preferences, significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, and mental illness. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of health care treatments, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, basic personal care services, and assistance with ADLs. Staff are required to receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include safety training (3 hours), nurse delegation and core diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and First-aid and CPR. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room.
