Assisted living communities provide coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized assistance. The services offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain cases, communities may offer hospice, continuing care, or respite. Texas has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer their own medication, returning medications to the proper locked areas, and listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: community resources, basic emergency first-aid, federal laws, and assisted living standards. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, general supervision or oversight, supervision or direct administration of medications, and activity and/or social program for residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room.
