Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers aid, care, and support to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually offer care supervision, help with transit and appointments, and outings for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, respite, or skilled nursing. The state of Texas maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, assistance with activities of daily living, supervision or direct administration of medications, and activity and/or social program for residents. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include assisted living standards, skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, basic principles of management, and resident assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, returning medications to the proper locked areas, and residents may self-administer their own medication. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment .
