Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential communities and aid for people who may need help with things such as showering or taking medication. Assisted living communities frequently provide aid with appointments and transportation, supervision of care, and opportunities for leisurely activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. Texas maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, food and nutrition services, resident characteristics (including dementia), and resident assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, residents may self-administer their own medication, and returning medications to the proper locked areas. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or direct administration of medications, personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, and general supervision or oversight. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan.
