Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care for people who need a helping hand with bathing or mobility. Assisted living communities often offer chances for recreational activity, supervision of care, and help with appointments and transportation. In certain cases, communities may offer continuing care, skilled nursing, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of Texas maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this type of community. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include accessibility requirements, basic principles of management, food and nutrition services, and federal laws. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or direct administration of medications, activity and/or social program for residents, assistance with activities of daily living, and general supervision or oversight. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and residents may self-administer their own medication. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment . There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
