Assisted living communities arrange organized living communities and health care to seniors who require support with everyday activities such as cooking meals or washing. Assisted living communities often offer support with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and help with transit and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. Texas has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: abuse/neglect, resident characteristics (including dementia), community resources, and food and nutrition services. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, and supervision or direct administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, returning medications to the proper locked areas, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy.
