Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individualized help. The services provided often involve aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or nursing care. The state of South Carolina maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as dietary needs, assistance with ADLs for the resident, requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, and assessing the extent of residents problems and needs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: occupational safety and health administration standards regarding blood-borne pathogens, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for designated staff members/volunteers to ensure that there is a certified staff member/volunteer present whenever residents are in the community, use of restraints , and procedures for checking and recording vital signs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, at least one structured recreation activity each day, transportation, and medication assistance. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. There is a maximum occupancy of 3 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer routine medications, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and monitor blood sugar levels.
