They took my cousin who was in skilled care facility with myasthenia gravis. They were welcoming ,attentive to his needs and communicative to me when things are not right. I recommend this place to anyone in the West Columbia area.

our families experience
The staff is nice. They are responsive, too. Mom says her meals are not made with her restrictions in mind. Salt and fat are the main issues there. The lost some of her laundry, but it was found a little over two weeks later. She likes the facility, which is critical.

Sweet community
The reason we gave the cleanliness a 4 is because the public bathroom was a little off. I was really impressed with the staff, their attentiveness and relationships with the residents. It felt like a big family with all the dynamics. So grateful for A Place For Mom for pointing us to the Pines. Also, they picked up on some health concerns during rehab and Dad got care promptly due to their awareness of a change in his energy.

Caregivers are the "plus" for The Pines!
They are short staffed. The administration is not good. The meals were okay. The client care staff is wonderful and treat the clients and family with honor and make connections. They care. I absolutely loved the care staff. The head nurse, [name removed] ,and my mother's caregivers were wonderful and truly loved her so much. One asked for some little thing of hers if I could spare them when she left and they knew she was on hospice. They treated her so sweetly. We had a camera in her room and they were sincere. However, we had to go back in the middle of the nights because they didn't answer the phones and mother was screaming in panic and couldn't remember to press her call button. And it was because they would only have 3-5 staff there for the whole 84 room facility. The administration doesn't care nor did they keep their word to us. I would not choose this facility again.

The Pines is a very nice facility that is the right size, so the staff know everyone personally and they pay personal attention to the residents, which is one of the most important factors in assisted living. The facility has been recently renovated and is very attractive.

I'm satisfied with this facility and my dad is, too. The staff is friendly and always there to help and to answer my questions. The food is good, but I'd suggest a better variety/more choices for breakfast. They tend to have the same few options everyday, no variety. Communication with the family is good. Housekeeping is ok, it could be better. They do offer transportation for the residents. Overall, it's a good place. I wouldn't mind living here myself if I needed it, I'd be content. I would recommend them to family and friends.

Going Down
In the past the service, upkeep and Patient/Elderly care was great. During the last couple of years the service has fallen off. The Rooms are unkept, and the staffing is slack. Those who remain are trying to do a good job, but the quality of care is still lacking. I realize the effect COVID had on all types of businesses, but Hospitals, Senior Care Facilities, and Schools should always keep a high standard. I pray the next visit reveals more attention to detail, cleanliness, and overall compassionate care then the last.

We Love The Pines
I have already told others about the community and will continue to recommend them to others for their loved ones. My loved one enjoys it here. The meals are delicious. The food is well balanced for the residents, and well cooked. There is wide time frames for meals for the residents to come down and enjoy the food. There are three meals a day being served. The only issue is the doctor and nurse techs with the medication given to my loved one, and taking blood sugar readings. The doctor isn't providing all the medication information to the nurses to provide my loved one. The doctor on staff, isn't following the primary doctor instructions for my loved one's medications.

Do not expect to have your loved one cared for without constant intervention from a family member. The staff requires consistent supervision, particularly in regard to the dispensation of medications.

Be sure to stay in touch with the staff.
Be sure to stay in constant contact with the staff in order to make sure that your loved one is taken care of. They're not timely and not consistent in responding to requests, so we have to be vigilant. They weren't administering her medication properly - we kept finding it on the floor. She has fallen several times so far. We were being billed for visiting doctor appointments, PT, and OT, yet they never notified us she was in need of or receiving this care. These are the type of things we've had to follow up with.

Mismanaged my father's meds and charged unauthorized fees
They ordered my dad's meds through Senior Health Associates after I told them he did not have insurance for the in house pharmacy Remedi and used the VA. He gets free VA. I called the VA and was informed that the facility didn't even try to order free insulin for on or around 11 months. The bills were sent to his room even though I am his POA, he has dementia, and has no issue with me seeing them. The executive director told a nurse not to give me a pill count and other info. She said I would have to sign for it but didn't have the form on hand to give me the requested info. She had adequate time to send those forms. Because of this, I didn't have info for my fathers VA doctors appointment. I took time off work for this. They do not work well with the VA as they advertise. I believe the executive director refused to give info based on spite. My dad's room smells like pee and they haven't provided a care plan as I requested. The food does not work with my father's diabetes.

Good for those who can live independently, but bad for those who need extra help
Our loved one was only there for a few months until we moved them out. During that time they said the breakfast meals were good but the other meals were terrible. They had activities but our loved one was never invited or encouraged to participate. When our loved one moved in they assessed her at a level 3 care and they advised she would have everything she would need, and all her needs would be met but that was not the case. Our loved one needed to be physically escorted to the dining area via wheelchair and on many occasions she was forgotten about. House keeping never came to our loved ones room, we would clean it when we would come and visit. The Lexington has now been taken over by new management and we have heard they are making some nice improvements.

Overall I feel your loved one would be safe here. The only issue that I have seen is the building is aging and there are some repairs needed, and the courtyard could be re-landscaped and modernized. I would like to see more choices of vegetarian meals for the residence or the ability to choose from a menu. I would recommend this community to others.

We Feel Like We Made The Best Choice For Our Loved One
Aside from the Covid stuff, there's lot of rules in place because of that, they seem to be pretty competent. They provide everything our loved one needs, and he seems to be happy here. He's fully mentally competent, so he would tell us if he thought something was wrong. They provide meals, laundry, activities, and they have a nurse there 24 hours a day. So if anything comes up, they have someone to assess the situation before they would call an ambulance or anything. They do a good job here.

A Place for Mom has scored Pines Columbia 9.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
