Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide personal care, oversight, and recreational activities to people who are about 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with appointments and transportation, supervision of care, and opportunities for social activity. In certain situations, communities may offer hospice, nursing, or continuing care. South Carolina has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, transportation, at least one structured recreation activity each day, and medication assistance. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with ADLs for the resident, dietary needs, recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, and assessing the extent of residents problems and needs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These include: procedures for checking and recording vital signs, occupational safety and health administration standards regarding blood-borne pathogens, Care of persons specific to the physical/mental condition being cared for in the community, and Basic first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, monitor blood sugar levels, and administer routine medications. In total, there can be no more than 3 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
