Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social events as well as individual assistance. The types of service provided often include aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. In some situations, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or “aging in place”. South Carolina maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing certifies this community type. There is a maximum occupancy of 3 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of fields. These include: Basic first-aid, use of restraints , management/care of persons with contagious and/or communicable disease, and Confidentiality of resident information and records and review of the Bill of Rights for Long-Term Care communities.. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer routine medications, monitor blood sugar levels, and staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being, dietary needs, requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, and assistance with ADLs for the resident. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, transportation, medication assistance, and at least one structured recreation activity each day.
