Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care to persons who might require a helping hand with everyday activities such as dressing or bathing. Assisted living communities frequently offer assistance with daily activities, opportunities for leisurely activity, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing, or hospice. South Carolina has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. In total, there can be no more than 3 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as dietary needs, requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, and recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, at least one structured recreation activity each day, assistance with ADLs, and medication assistance. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor blood sugar levels, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and administer routine medications. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include procedures for checking and recording vital signs, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for designated staff members/volunteers to ensure that there is a certified staff member/volunteer present whenever residents are in the community, use of restraints , and Basic first-aid.
