Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, supervision, and support to healthy persons who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with transit and appointments, assistance with daily activities, and supervision of care. In select cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing care, or “aging in place”. The state of Oregon maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of community. Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Licensing and Regulatory Oversight governs this community type. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include 24-hour emergency care service, transportation services, assist psychosocial wellbeing, and health services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as ADLs test, mental health evaluation, physical health exam, and risk indicator assessment. Public assistance is available through Medicaid Aged and Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide three meals a day and all food must be in accordance with the Department of Agriculture food pyramid. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include residents’ rights, fire safety, abuse and reporting requirements, and emergency procedures.
