Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as personalized assistance. Assisted living communities commonly offer help with the activities of daily life, opportunities for social activity, and supervision of care. In certain instances, communities may provide continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. Ohio has specific standards associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health supervises this type of community. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These areas include job responsibilities, residents rights, community procedures, and securing emergency assistance. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as functional status assessment, cognitive status review, psychical history, and health history. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, supervision, activities, and medication administration. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observation, assistance organizing medication, and handing medications to resident. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room.
