Assisted living communities provide healthcare, social interaction, and oversight to persons who are on average 65 years old. Services offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select situations, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or hospice. Ohio has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health governs this community type. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, health history, medical diagnoses, and medication review. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observation, verifying labels, and assistance opening and taking medication. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include residents rights, job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, and community procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activities, personal care, medication administration, and assistance with self-administration of medication.
