An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides care, support, and supervision to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Services offered often involve help with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing, or Alzheimer’s care. In New Mexico, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $38,100 . The state of New Mexico maintains specific statutes related to this type of community. New Mexico Department of Health, Division of Health Improvement, Health community Licensing and Certification Bureau regulates this type of community. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These include: infection control, transportation safety, first-aid, and resident confidentiality. These include assist or supervise with specified nursing services, laundry, supervise self-administration of medications, and recreational/social activities. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Public assistance is available through 1115 Centennial Care waiver managed care demonstration program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include staff must receive training in safe food handling, provide three nutritionally balanced meals, provide therapeutic diets according the professionall orders, and provide evening snacks. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self administer medication, a pharmacist must consult with the community quarterly, and staff may assist in administering medication.
