Assisted living communities have the luxury of regular social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized care. Assisted living communities usually provide assistance with transportation and appointments, supervision of care, and opportunities for recreational activity. In some instances, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or continuing care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and administer medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include caring for residents with impairment, abuse and neglect, residents rights, and pain management. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, pharmaceutical services, dietary services, and limited nursing care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a level of care assessment, nursing needs, and routines and preferences.
