Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers aid, supervision, and care to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently offer supervision of care, help with transit and appointments, and opportunities for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or continuing care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey has specific rules related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, a health care assessment, nursing needs, and a level of care assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and administer medication. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, recreational activities, social work services, and dietary services. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These include: pain management, emergency plans and procedures, caring for residents with impairment, and residents rights.
