Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care to your loved one who may need help with things such as bathing or dressing. Services offered often include aid with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this type of community. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include abuse/neglect, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, and 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, assistance with distribution, assistance with storage of medications, and assistance with administration of medications.
