Assisted living communities provide coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual help. The types of service provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, dementia care, or skilled nursing. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: working with residents with mental illness, mentally confused residents, behavior management, and techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, 24-hour care, assistance with distribution, and assistance with activities of daily living .
