Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer personal care, supervision, and recreational activities to people who are about 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities commonly provide help with appointments and transit, assistance with daily activities, and outings for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, nursing, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, and 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, assistance with recreational activities, and 24-hour care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
