Assisted living communities administer oversight, recreational activities, and personal care to individuals around 65 years old. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. Staff must receive training in a number of fields. These include: promoting independence in activities of daily living, 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, 24 hours of additional training on interview skills, and fire safety.
