Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care to persons who need help with preparing meals or showering. The types of service offered often include aid with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, dementia care, or nursing. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . Michigan has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, and service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication management, supervised personal care, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include first-aid, safety and fire prevention, reporting requirements and documentation, and administration of medication.
