Assisted living communities have the luxury of organized social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized assistance. Assisted living communities commonly offer aid with transit and appointments, support with the activities of daily life, and outings for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or “aging in place”. The Department of Human Services licenses regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission.
