An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers aid, care, and supervision to healthy individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of Michigan has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this type of community. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, first-aid, safety and fire prevention, and residents rights and responsibilities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met.
