Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and aid for seniors who might require support with everyday activities such as mobility or self-administering medication. The types of service provided often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing, or hospice. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . The state of Michigan maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this community type. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These include: supervision, reporting requirements and documentation, staff training program based on the home’s program statement, and staff training program based on the residents’ service plans. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and medication supervision and administration. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, assisting a resident to keep appointments, and supporting a resident’s personal and social needs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.
