An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides care, supervision, and aid to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often offer support with daily activities, supervision of care, and opportunities for recreational activity. In select cases, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing, or hospice. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene supervises this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be varied, meals must be palatable, and meals must be properly prepared. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include residents’ rights, the use of service plans, including standard precautions, and basic food safety. These provisions include residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, reminders to take medications, and staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessed on psychiatric conditions, risk factor management needs, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, and monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents
